With the Delhi Assembly elections due to be held on 5 February, political parties are making heavy use of memes on the campaign trail. This morning, the ruling Aam Aadmi Party shared a video titled BJP’s Got Latent—a spoof on Samay Raina’s popular format show India’s Got Latent—on their X and Instagram handles, taking potshots at their political rival.
In the 90-second clip, AAP party members Raghav Chadha and Sanjay Singh form the panel of judges alongside the party’s National Convener Arvind Kejriwal, as they judge BJP candidate Parvesh Verma’s “kaleshwala rap”. The video includes references to accusations that the BJP illegally distributed money and alcohol, and the party’s allegedly communal politics.
The video comes three days after a teaser was released on AAP’s social media channels in which a voiceover—similar to that of Raina’s at the beginning of each episode—says “Yahan unnecessary aur nikkame log hain jinka Delhi mein hone ka koi point nahin hai, just like BJP in Delhi.” The teaser also featured recent controversial comments made by Verma and BJP’s Lok Sabha MP Ramesh Bidhuri.
This video came in response to BJP’s animated spoof of India’s Got Latent in which they targeted Kejriwal’s promises for a cleaner Delhi. “Main Delhi ko London Paris bana dunga, saaf hawa paani ke liye tarsa dunga,” says an animated Kejriwal in the clip. This was followed by videos that mocked AAP members Manish Sisodia and Sanjay Singh.
Raina’s format show India’s Got Latent has taken the country by storm, with every episode trending in the top 10 on YouTube India. The comedian also recently released an app for the viral show that climbed to the Top 50 of Google Play Store apps and was at first place on Apple’s App Store.
