Comedian Raunaq Rajani has alleged that his wife suffered a fractured rib after they were detained by Mumbai Police during the NEET protests at Shivaji Park on 22 July. In a video posted to Instagram on 26 July, Rajani shared phone footage of the incident from various angles, claiming that police officers used excessive force while detaining the pair.

“Hi, my wife’s rib has been fractured because of the protests in Mumbai. It was fractured by a policeman,” Rajani says at the beginning of the video, before explaining the sequence of events that led to the injury.

According to Rajani, he and his wife Henna Mirchandani were detained at 4:47 pm while filming police officers rounding up protesters. “They shoved us in with brute force. I ended up having a sprain on my neck. She ended up having pain on her ribs,” he says, adding that they initially did not seek medical attention and went to Delhi the next day to join the movement at Jantar Mantar. However, after the pain persisted, Rajani said an X-ray showed that his wife had suffered a fractured rib.

Rajani also shared multiple clips from the detention, alleging that a plain-clothes police officer forcefully pushed his wife into a police bus, and that a uniformed officer later kicked her while they were inside the vehicle. Rajani alleged that a male officer, rather than a woman officer, pushed his wife into the police vehicle. Referring to another video from inside the bus, he adds, “The man in khaki kicked my wife on the rib.”

Rajani said the couple has submitted a complaint at Shivaji Park Police Station and is awaiting the registration of an FIR. At the time of writing, Mumbai Police had not issued a statement responding to the allegations.

The incident comes amid nationwide protests over alleged irregularities in the NEET examination, with demonstrators demanding accountability from the government. Rajani was among several people detained during the Mumbai protests last week.
