Aaditya Kulshreshtha—better known as Kullu (or Writer OP, if you’re a long-time follower of the OG Gang)—has only been on the come up for the last two years. The comedian first became an integral part of Tanmay Bhat’s React series, toured the country with his special Smooth Kullu Smooth, has been commentating for the IPL and also made his Bollywood debut in the Khushi Kapoor-starrer Loveyapa. Despite having all this going on, the Bhopali boy has managed to piece together a brand new standup special titled Freshers Party.

He kicks off the tour today in Gurugram and is on tour till 22 June before he jets off to the United Kingdom to perform his hour. We caught up with him to know more about Freshers Party.

Quick! What’s this show about?

The show is about some recent developments in my life. A majority of the show focuses on some prominent stories from my college life. The show largely revolves around friendships and college life.

How many shows are you doing, across how many cities? Will you be adding more?

Currently I’ve announced 15 shows before touring the United Kingdom with the same show. Later this year I plan to do at least 30 cities in India.

How long did you spend writing this material?

Since last year, I have been doing a lot of college shows where this material has resonated with the young audience a lot. So I can say it has taken me a year to develop this new show.

Do you plan on eventually recording this material and releasing it online?

Yes. I haven’t released any of my standup content properly so far. My audience has majorly watched me on Tanmay Reacts, some vlogs and podcasts and so on. So I plan to tour with this material for a year and then release it as a special on YouTube.

How did you come up with the name ‘Freshers Party’?

I was thinking a lot about how to name it and I asked Zakir [Khan] bhai for advice. And as always he was bang on. The first name he suggested was Freshers Party’ and it stuck with me.

What’s your elevator pitch for people to come watch it live?

Imagine sitting in a canteen while one of your friends is telling you all the gossip and stories from a college trip they took. That’s the vibe of the show.

According to you, who would be the ideal plus-one for the show?

Best option would be to watch it with your friends. As in your gang of buddies who you can trust your life with. But to be honest I think you can enjoy this show with anyone. It’s something everyone has gone through. So it’s a very personal experience for everyone.

On a scale of 1-wtfamidoing how nervous are you?

Extremely nervous. I had become very comfortable with my material and sets from the last 8 years. And I would fall back on them whenever I used to feel like it. But now I can’t use those jokes anymore. So technically this the first time I am building a whole new show.

Which books are you going to carry on tour?

I will be carrying Story by Robert McKee, Letters to Sartre by Simone de Beauvoir and Childhood, Boyhood, Youth by Tolstoy. Ab dekhta hoon ismein se kitni padh paunga.

Will the poha pact be intact when you’re travelling?

It is always on. While on tour, I have friends all over the country who keep me feeding good poha regularly.
