Some thoughts are best left in your notes app. Karan Veer Khurana, however, has decided to turn his into a standup show. Titled To Whom It May Concern, the work-in-progress hour promises to be a collection of his weirdest thoughts from the past year, covering his possible ADHD, his various tendencies, and the strange things your brain comes up with when you’re left alone with it for too long. The idea, as Khurana puts it, is simple: get on stage, transfer all your worries to the audience, and leave with none of your own.
Now, he’s taking these concerns on the road for his first-ever stand-up tour. Khurana has been finding his feet across comedy, theatre and improv for the last few years, and To Whom It May Concern is his attempt to lean into his more unhinged, decidedly silly side. He calls it his comedic awakening, or, in his own words, coming out as a comedian to the world. We caught up with him to talk about the show, the thoughts that inspired it, and why the audience might want to be concerned.
Quick! Tell us what the show is about!
It’s about some of my weirdest thoughts from the past year, who I think I am, my various tendencies, and my possible ADHD as a coping mechanism. Thoughts that seem concerning when I’m sitting alone with, but which, when I share on stage, transfer all the concern to the audience. And that’s really the purpose of standup comedy: I get on stage so that my worries become yours, and I have no worries. It’s also about discovering myself as a comedian, leaning into the incredibly silly, unhinged and wacky parts of me that don’t always come out in non-performative settings. Essentially, it’s me coming out as a comic to the world, and sharing my comedic awakening with everyone, pretentious as that might sound.
How many shows are you doing across how many cities? Will you be adding more shows in the coming months?
For now I am doing 2 shows in Mumbai, 2 in Pune and 3 in Bangalore. Since this is my first ever tour, I wanted to test the waters by listing only these many at first. I thought I’d sell like 10 tickets per show but the response has been shockingly incredible. Naturally the next step is to add more cities starting next year. Looking at you Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Chennai!
How long did you spend writing this show?
Shhh. I am still writing it.
Will you eventually be recording it for online release?
Parts of this will be recorded for an online release, yes. I’m very excited to make a fresh YouTube video in the coming months!
What’s your elevator pitch for people to come watch it live?
My elevator pitch? Okay here goes nothing. This is a trial show so obviously, no thoughts or bits are final. However, the struggle in and of itself is hilarious. Particularly because I am at my silliest when I’m testing material. So, please come watch me fail.
According to you, who would be the ideal plus-one to bring to the live show?
Anyone you can make silly, dumb sounds with.
Why are you calling the show ‘To Whom It May Concern’?
Because I have much to say and no clue who to really say it to.
On a scale of 1-wtfamidoing how nervous are you?
Do you have any pre-show rituals?
Yes. I like to do a little karaoke sesh at home before heading to the venue. Jar of Hearts by Christina Perri almost always makes the list.
What are the last three songs you added to your playlist?
A song called Shuggie (Bonus Track) by Her, On Video by Phoebe Bridgers and Send it Back by DON WEST.
