Spread the love

If you love scrolling through Instagram reels, odds are you’ve come across Pranit More’s relatable takes on cricket and Bollywood films. The comedian recently hit the 2,00,000 follower milestone on Instagram and is going strong dropping jokes about topical content. But he’s got more to offer than just quick fixes.

The comedian was previously touring with two shows—his Hindi-language special Baap Ko Mat Sikha and the Marathi-language hour Marathi Mulga. After the success of both the shows, the comedian is setting out on tour with his latest hour titled Back Bencher. In the hour, More is set to tell us about all the hijinks him and his best friends got up to in school. We caught up with him to know more about the new show and what to expect. Read through!

Quick! What’s the show about?

So, in my previous show Baap Ko Mat Sikha, I had a lot of stories and anecdotes about my father. In this latest hour, I’m talking more about me and my friends and the things we have done together. I had two best friends during my school and college life—Bulbasaur and Vasu. Humnein jo bhi kaand kiye the, I talk about that in the show.

How many shows are you doing, across how many cities?

Right now we are live with the Mumbai and Pune shows and the tickets for the other cities should be available soon as well. We are also planning a Maharashtra tour. Thoda ulta kar rahe hai iss baar. Usually, we do the India tour first and then perform across Maharashtra. But this time I got a lot of messages from fans to perform in their cities so I am doing that. So I’m guessing we’ll do around 30-40 cities during these tours.

How long did you spend writing the show?

I think 2-2.5 years? Basically, the two major stories in this hour, I’ve been performing and perfecting them for quite some time now. But over the course of time, my style and delivery has obviously changed. So I’ve rewritten a lot from the set. This is like a new version of those stories.

Will you be recording this material?

Yes, there is one story from this hour that I will be recording. It is a pretty tight set that I want to publish on YouTube. Eventually, the plan is to release the entire hour. But right now it depends on the response I get at the live shows.

Why should we watch it live?

Yaar, the live feel is always different. Watching standup on reels or YouTube is fun but watching standup comedy live takes the experience to the next level. Plus, I have a lot of interactive segments in my shows. I do a lot of crowd work too. If you want to be a part of those things, it’ll only be possible at the live shows. In the videos, you can just see what I said to the person or whatever. When you’re there in person, you get to be a part of the process.

According to you, who would be the ideal plus-one to bring for this show?

Ideal plus-one for this show is your friend. Or you can come with your sibling if you are close to them. Basically, anybody with whom you can enjoy humour is the best person to come with to the show. It might be tricky to come with your parents but it depends on what your dynamic is with them. A lot of people have brought their mom and dad along.

Why are you calling the show ‘Back Bencher’?

I’m calling it Back Bencher because that’s what I’ve been all my life. The stories I’ve shared in the new show are things only back benchers end up doing. Aage walein toh hamesha bas padhai hi karte hai.

On a scale of 1-wtfamidoing, how nervous are you?

To be honest, I’m not particularly nervous for the tour. I’ve been doing comedy for 6-7 years now so I’m fairly comfortable. But there are moments when the nervousness creeps in. Like, before I go up on stage I’m thinking about what the audience will be like. I’m most nervous before a recording because there’s also money on the line. And for a good video you want to deliver your best. That’s when things get a slightly scary.

If you could give a shoutout to one comedian you’ve seen recently, who would it be?

Sagar Punjabi. He’s extremely talented but still underrated. People are yet to discover him because he hasn’t put out a lot of content yet. But he’s extremely funny. He opens some of my shows also. You have to come experience it once. Bahut maza aayega.

A song you have on a repeat currently?

There are so many songs that release everyday that the ones on loop keep changing. But one all-time favourite is Aazadiyan from the Udaan soundtrack.

You can get your tickets for Back Bencher here.
