Comedian Ankita Shrivastav has been entertaining audiences for almost seven years with her incredibly relatable takes on Indian households, relationships and most things pop culture. She started her comedy journey in Mumbai and first rose to fame in 2017 with her viral video Bombay Girls, Local Train. In the video, which has now racked up almost five million views, Shrivastav riffs about the adventure sport that is travelling in Mumbai local trains. Since then the comedian has released a few videos every year, all of them getting views in the millions. But if you want to skip the screen and catch the real deal, now is your chance. She is currently on tour with her untitled solo show and is set to hit up Mumbai, Bengaluru, Delhi and Pune during the coming weekends. Read through to know everything about the comedian’s new family-friendly hour!
1. Quick! Whatโs this show about?
This is a show about family. And if you get your parents along, you might be able to convince them that love marriages are better than arranged marriages. I promise.
2. How many shows are you doing, across how many cities?
It was a 12-city tour. I’m done with half of it so there are six more shows left in four more cities. I’m going to end it in Bengaluru where I’ll also be recording the performances. So that’s going to be extra special.
3. How long did you spend writing the show?
Zindagi ke kuch gham lagein hue hain yeh show banane mein. The writing took me almost six months.
4. Is this already leading up to a recorded special for a streaming platform?
Yes, I am recording the shows. The plan right now is to release the sets on YouTube on my own channel.
5. Why should we watch it live?
Because it’s your only chance to laugh on the weekend before Monday hits you in the face again.
6. According to you, who would be the ideal plus-one to bring to the live show?
If you have a younger sibling, bring them along because I promise it’s going to be a mad ride for both of you! This is also a PG-rated show so you can bring your family and extended family as well. Or enjoy it with your partner or exes (if you can).
7. Do you have a name in mind for the show?
When I release the sets on YouTube they’ll have names but for the entire show I’ve kept it simple. It’s Ankita Shrivastav Live.
8. On a scale of 1 โ WTFAMIDOING, how nervous are you?
It’s always at WTFAMIDOING. Recently, before a show the organiser came up to me before I went up and said, “There are six drunk men in the audience. Sambhal lena.” And I was like, “What the f*ck am I doing?” In another show there was a short circuit at the venue. So, again I thought, “What the f*ck am I doing?” As a performing artist, your perennial state is, “What the f*ck am I doing?”
9. Which city are you most excited to perform in and why?
I love performing in Pune. But my absolute favourite has to be Bengaluru. I love the way the crowd responds to the jokes over there. And if you manage to ignore the traffic, it’s also a beautiful city.
10. Do you have any pre-show rituals?
It’s usually a few deep breaths and before the show starts I’ll message a couple of my favourite people and make sure they wish me all the luck in this world.
