Comedy legend and ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ star Richard Lewis passed away on Tuesday at the age of 76. He died peacefully in his home in Los Angeles Tuesday night after suffering a heart attack, his publicist Jeff Abraham said in a statement. Last year, Lewis had revealed that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and had announced his retirement from standup comedy.

“Richard and I were born three days apart in the same hospital and for most of my life he’s been like a brother to me,” said Larry David, creator of ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’, in a statement shared by HBO. “He had that rare combination of being the funniest person and also the sweetest. But today he made me sob and for that, I’ll never forgive him.”

Lewis rose to prominence in the 1980s owing to his self-deprecating and candid brand of humour. Known for poking fun at his own struggles with addiction and depression, he was dubbed as the “Franz Kafka of comedy” by fellow comedian and legend Mel Brooks.

Comedians and fans from across the world payed homage to Lewis for his contribution to the art of standup comedy.
