Everyone and their uncle has been weighing in on American politics over the past week, in the wake of Donald Trump’s election win, whether it’s on podcasts, TV news interviews or their social media accounts. Vir Das—currently touring the US with his show Mindfool—also got in on the action, throwing light-hearted jabs at America’s political dysfunction and the new President-elect.
“Congrats America, you are great again,” the comedian says in a live comedy clip that he shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday. “Donald J. Trump is going to be your President for the next four… uh, 25 years.”
In the nearly seven-minute-long clip, Das takes aim at Americans’ “addiction to entertainment,” and how that feeds into Trump’s surprising—but enduring—appeal. Amid swipes at Trump’s foreign policy moves and his affinity for dictators, there were also quips about American obsession with “losers”.
“In America, more people watched the concession speech than the victory speech,” he says. “It’s like a World Cup final where India wins, and then everyone rushes to the Pakistan dressing room to watch them.”
Das also had sharply satirical jokes about Trump’s ‘America First’ campaign, the racial politics of this election, and the failures of the Kamala Harris campaign. There’s even a couple of subtle Easter eggs about Indian politics in there.
Das has a number of dates lined up for the Mindfool tour across the US, Ireland and the UK over the next month. In October, he recorded the show over two sold-out shows at Mumbai’s NSCI Dome for a comedy special set to premiere on Netflix. This will be his sixth Netflix special, and seventh overall.
