A number of audience members walked out of a Dave Chappelle show in Boston after the comedian spoke out about the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict. The Wall Street Journal reports that during his 19 October show at Boston’s TD Garden, the comedian condemned Hamas’s attack on Israel on 7 October, as well as Israel’s retaliatory bombing of Gaza, which he characterised as “war crimes.”

Attendees told the WSJ that the comments came after Chappelle said that he didn’t think students should lose job offers for supporting Palestinians. An audience member shouted for Chappelle to shut up, which prompted Chappelle to criticise the Israeli government for cutting off water and other essentials to civilians in Gaza. He also accused the Israeli government of killing innocent people, later saying that two wrongs don’t make a right. Some attendees walked out of the show in protest, alleging that Chappelle’s words made them feel unsafe.

A spokesperson for Chappelle told the Daily Mail that the comedian was not in Boston on that evening, though the WSJ report quotes multiple audience members, and the Boston venue’s website shows that he was scheduled to perform there on 19 and 20 October.
