The Special Cell of Delhi Police has conducted raids on the homes of several journalists and activists—including comedian and satirist Sanjay Rajoura—this morning, as part of an investigation into media outlet NewsClick, according to The Wire. The police seized laptops, phones, hard drives and other electronic devices from the residences of journalists and employees associated with NewsClick, and several individuals have apparently been detained for “interrogation.” The raids took place in connection with a case under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and sections 153A and 120B of the Indian Penal Code, registered on August 17.
According to media reports, police raided the website’s editor Prabir Purkayashta, journalists Abhisar Sharma, Aunindyo Chakravarty and Bhasha Singh and comedian Sanjay Rajoura, among others. Rajoura, who is part of the political satire show Aisi Taisi Democracy alongside Varun Grover and Rahul Ram, has reportedly been taken to the Lodhi Road police station for questioning.
The police action comes after a New York Times report which claims that NewsClick had received funds from China to create an “anti-India” atmosphere. The report stated that tech mogul Neville Roy Singham, who finances the website, had links with the Communist Party of China and was spreading pro-China messages. NewsClick had earlier called all the allegations against it as “false and misleading”, “unfounded and without basis in fact or law.” Several press groups, including the Mumbai Press Club and Press Club of India have expressed concerns about the raids and called for an unbiased investigation.
