Hasan Minhaj’s upcoming Bollywood comedy Best Of The Best is all set to be directed by Lena Khan, Variety reported. The project—which was formerly called For The Culture—will showcase the extremely competitive world of Bollywood dance tournaments in American schools. Announced in December 2021 when Minhaj launched his production company 186K Films, the project was picked up by Amazon Studios following an eight-studio bidding war.

Minhaj’s longtime collaborator Prashanth Venkataramanujam—who was the head writer for the critically acclaimed Netflix talk show Patriot Act With Hasan Minhaj—teamed up with him to script the film. In addition to writing the project, Minhaj will also play a role. “There’s a huge audience out there that’s not seeing their experiences, their lives, and their stories on screen in prestige television or studio films. Those are the stories we want to champion,” Minhaj and Venkataramanujam said in a joint statement.

In October 2022, Minhaj spoke with NPR about the inspiration for the upcoming film. “So, when you go to college, there’s a lot of South Asian and Southeast Asian kids that will compete in these competitive Bollywood dance competitions where you’ll do a combination of various types of dancing,” he said. “Hindi film dancing, Bollywood dancing, classical Indian dance, krumping, breakdancing, all sorts, all combined into one.”

Khan, a UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television alumnus with a specialisation in comedy, made her directorial debut with The Tiger Hunter. The film starring Danny Pudi, followed the life of an Indian engineer who migrates to the United States of America.

The cast and release date for the film is yet to be announced.
