Former US president Donald Trump sat down with comedian and podcaster Joe Rogan for a freewheeling three-hour interview released earlier this week. Trump and Rogan discussed everything from his conversation with North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il, his false claims that the 2020 election was “stolen”, and—of course—whether aliens exist in a wide-ranging discussion that has racked up over 39 million views over four days.
The episode comes two years after Rogan had called Trump “an existential threat to democracy” and refused to host him on the popular Joe Rogan Experience podcast. Though Rogan did not endorse Trump for president, the interview does represent a U-turn, with Rogan praising Trump for his sense of humour and his impressions of President Joe Biden.
True to form, Trump repeated many false claims from his campaign speeches, with CNN counting at least 32 on the show. Many of these claims went unchallenged. Rogan has previously come under fire for allowing guests to spread misinformation and falsehoods on his show, most notably in 2020 when he invited conspiracy theorist Alex Jones to appear on the podcast.
Trump’s VP pick JD Vance is also scheduled to appear on The Joe Rogan Experience this week. Rogan has said on X that he also invited Democratic nominee and current vice-president Kamala Harris to appear on the show, but Harris’s teams responded with conditions—including a one-hour time limit—that he rejected. “My sincere wish is to just have a nice conversation and get to know her as a human being,” he wrote, adding that the Harris campaign hasn’t refused the invitation yet. “I really hope we can make it happen.”
