Samay Raina’s long been a champion of Indian hip-hop in general, and New Delhi rapper KR$NA in particular. On his long-awaited mixtape Yours Trulyโwhich dropped last nightโKR$NA took the opportunity to show that this wasn’t just an “ek tarfi” relationship. On Sensitive, the third track off the mixtape, KR$NA and New Delhi rap duo Seedhe Maut signal that they stand solidly behind Samay Raina in the wake of the controversy surrounding his YouTube show India’s Got Latent.
The track begins with a vocal sample of Samay Raina asking “Are we ready to start the show?” As if to banish any doubts about the song’s central theme, Seedhe Maut’s Encore ABJ starts his opening verse with the line “Samay se naraaz hain ab bhi? Kya mazaak hai (Are they still angry with Samay? What a joke).” Over the next three and a half minutes, the three rappers drop further references to Raina’s show in between incisive critiques of media sensationalism, divisive identity politics and our propensity for being offended. As the song’s chorus urges us, “stop being so sensitive, okay?”
Both KR$NA and Seedhe Maut have appeared as guest judges on different episodes of India’s Got Latent, the talent-hunt/comedy show that was taken off YouTube after a joke made by podcaster Ranveer Allahabadia went viral and generated national outrage. Raina also played guitar on the track Bechara off Seedhe Maut, Hurricane and DL91 Era’s mixtape DL91 FM, which released earlierย thisย month.
