Comedian Kunal Kamra has been served with a legal notice over a remark he made at the Cockroach Janata Party protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, reported NDTV. The comedian was speaking in support of environmentalist, education reformer and activist Sonam Wangchuk, who is currently on an indefinite hunger strike over the NEET Paper leak case.

A video from the protest went viral earlier this week in which Kamra took a swipe at the Centre, saying, “Yeh sarkaar Sita ke pati ka naam lekar, Nita ke pati ka kaam kar rahi hain,” implying that the government invokes religious sentiments while working in the interests of certain industrialists.

The legal notice has been issued by Supreme Court advocate Amita Sachdeva, who alleged that Kamra’s remark hurt Hindu religious sentiments by invoking Lord Ram and Sita in political satire. She has demanded that the comedian remove the video from all platforms, issue an unconditional public apology, and provide a written undertaking that he will refrain from making similar remarks in the future.

According to the notice, Kamra has been given 48 hours to comply with the demands. It also states that failure to do so could result in further legal action, including the filing of a police complaint. At the time of writing, the comedian had not publicly responded to the notice.
