Comedian and reality TV star Munawar Faruqui was among 14 people detained by Mumbai police during a raid at a hookah bar in Mumbai’s Fort Area. Faruqui and the other accused were later released, a police official told news agency ANI.
Mumbai Police’s Social Service Branch conducted the raid at an allegedly illegal hookah parlour in Bora Bazar at 10:30pm on Tuesday night, and the operation reportedly continued till 5am the next morning. Police seized INR 4,000 in cash and nine hookah pots worth INR 13,500. A case has been registered under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) as well as Indian Penal Code sections 283 (danger or obstruction in public way or line of navigation) and 336 (act endangering life or personal safety of others).
“The police found stand-up comedian Munawar Faruqui and others smoking hookahs at the joint,” a senior officer told Press Trust of India. “We also have a video of their act. We detained them, but they were later allowed to go as the sections slapped against them were bailable.” The officer added that Faruqui and the others were served notices before being released.
Faruquiโwho had earlier spent over a month in police custody after being arrested at a comedy show in Indore in January 2021โposted on Instagram soon after his release, sharing a photo of himself at the Chatrapati Shivaji International Airport, with the caption “tired and travelling.”
