Munawar Faruqui has allegedly received threats from a criminal gang led by jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, who is currently being investigated for his suspected involvement in the assassination of political leader Baba Siddiqui, the Hindustan Times reports.
Mumbai police officials told the newspaper that Faruqui has been given police security because of information they received about a potential threat to the comedian from Bishnoi’s gang. The reason for the threat is still unknown, though police are investigating the matter.
The Bigg Boss winner was one of several prominent names on the gang’s hit list, which Bishnoi revealed to officials from the National Investigation Agency during an interrogation, India Today reports.
In addition, according to Times of India, two of the gang’s members had followed Faruqui in September, even booking a room in the same Delhi hotel where he was staying. However, the plot was foiled and Faruqui was quickly escorted to safety by the police.
