Netflix’s bid for global TV screen domination continues, with the streaming giant scoring a whopping 160 nominations at the 2020 Emmy Awards, setting a new industry record. Rivals HBO—which spent 17 of the last 18 years at the top of the Emmy nominations pile—showed that they could still produce some of the best television content out there, bagging 26 nominations for their critically acclaimed dystopian drama Watchmen. But they were still far short of Netflix’s haul with ‘only’ 107 nominations. Streaming services as a whole also dominate the nominations list, with 86% (!) of the nominees not requiring a cable connection to view.

In the standup comedy category (aka the ‘variety special’)—once an HBO mainstay—all but one of the 11 nominees for two awards went to a Netflix property. The one outlier is Dave Chappelle’s Mark Twain Prize for American Humor ceremony on PBS, and even he also has a Netflix special (Sticks & Stones) on the list. Interestingly, Apple TV Plus’s Carpool Karaoke with James Corden—which won Best Variety Special (Pre-Recorded) in three of the last four years—didn’t even get a nomination this time around. Check out the standup comedy nominations below.

Elsewhere, Amazon Prime Video’s comedy Marvelous Ms. Maisel is another Emmy favourite, with 20 nominations. It will compete for Outstanding Comedy Series along with The Good Place, Insecure, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Schitt’s Creek, What We Do in the Shadows, Dead to Me, and The Kominsky Method. Saturday Night Live also received 15 nominations, including nods for Kenan Thomspon, Kate McKinnon, Cecily Strong, as well as for the Variety Sketch series award.
