A group of Shiv Sena workers on Monday allegedly vandalised the premises of Hotel Unicontinental in Mumbai’s Khar suburb, claiming that stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra’s latest comedy special—shot at the venue—made indirect references to Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

The comedian’s show, which discusses themes around Maharashtra’s political landscape, does not name any individual. However, protestors said they were offended by what they perceived as implied commentary targeting Shinde. In response, they gathered outside Khar Police Station demanding action and raising slogans against Kamra.

Footage from the incident shows broken glass and overturned furniture inside the premises. No injuries were reported. Police have confirmed that a complaint has been filed and are reviewing CCTV footage to identify those involved in the vandalism.

Kamra has not issued a public statement yet. The investigation is ongoing.

UPDATE:

The comedy venue where the special was recorded, The Habitat, has put out a statement and announced that they will halt shows indefinitely. The club will be shutting down till they “figure out the best way to provide a platform for free expression” without finding themselves in trouble. The venue was caught in the crossfire amid the India’s Got Latent row last month.

“There is freedom to do stand-up comedy, but he cannot speak whatever he wants,” Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said weighing in on the matter, reported ANI. “The people of Maharashtra have decided who the traitor is. Kunal Kamra should apologise. This will not be tolerated.”
