Superboys Of Malegaon—a meta-comedy directed by Reema Kagti and written by Varun Grover—is all set to make its theatrical debut on 28 February 2025. Produced by Tiger Baby Films and Excel Entertainment, the movie is inspired by the true story of amateur film-maker Nasir Shaikh and his friends, whose quest to turn the little town of Malegaon into a film-making hub was first featured in the 2008 documentary Supermen Of Malegaon.
Kagti’s film has already earned critical acclaim at major international festivals, including Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), the 68th BFI London Film Festival, Palm Springs International Film Festival and Red Sea International Film Festival. Now the film will hit select theatres across India, the US, UK, UAE, Australia and New Zealand.
“Superboys of Malegaon is a story about film-making and friendship colliding to create a powerful end result,” says Kagti in a press statement. “It’s about a bunch of guys who didn’t have much but created something stunning from that, against all odds.”
“Screenwriter Varun Grover spent a lot of time in Malegaon extensively researching Nasir and all the people in the story, which no doubt has added a lot of depth and realism to the narrative,” she added, elaborating on the considerable research that went into making the film.
“Movies lift you up,” says producer Zoya Akhtar. “They take you beyond your reality. They make dreams come true. I think that’s one message that comes out. The message of friendship, their bond, and what you can do for another. The other message that comes through is that if you follow your dream, if you chase what you’re after, somewhere you will make a dent. However small, it will be your dent, and it will be a dent that is there forever. You will not be missed.”
Superboys Of Malegaon stars Adarsh Gourav, Vineet Kumar Singh, and Shashank Arora as the film’s three leads. The music and score is by composers Sachin-Jigar, with veteran lyricist Javed Akhtar contributing lyrics. Following its theatrical run, the film will be available for streaming on Amazon.
