Yesterday, Kunal Kamra released the trailer for an upcoming documentary titled The Free Market across his social media channels. Slated for release on 30 July, the documentary—produced by Kamra’s Why Are We Even Productions, who also co-directed it alongside Revant Talekar—explores the various ways in which aggregator companies like Uber, Swiggy, Zomato and Ola allegedly exploit their workers. It also tells the story of how Rajasthan passed the groundbreaking Rajasthan Platform Based Gig Workers (Registration and Welfare) Act on 24 July, 2023.

The Act aims to provide the various workers at the forefront of the gig economy with social security and essential benefits. “Their triumph inspired other states to implement reforms to protect Indian workers from exploitation driven by capital greed,” reads the caption of the trailer on YouTube.

“I think it’s an important film for all those who think that platform apps are job creators,” Kamra told DeadAnt. “It’s also necessary for all the folks, including myself, who avail the gig services to know the accurate ‘cost’ of their impatience and 24/7 indulgence.”

The three-minute trailer features professionals from various sectors including Prof. Babu Mathew (National Law School of India University), Biju Mathew (International Alliance of App-based Transport Workers), Rakshita Swamy (Social Accountability Forum for Action and Research and Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathan) and Santosh Lad (Minister of Labour, Government of Karnataka).

This documentary comes shortly after Kamra’s 10-part series Report Card, in which he closely looked at some of the shortcomings of the government with regard to issues such as migrant workers’ crisis, unemployment and health among others.
