Only Anthony Jeselnik could make a book club announcement sound like a dare. The comedian kicked off the Jeselnik Book Club with an announcement on Instagram yesterday. Unlike Fight Club, there’s only one rule to get in and keep your membership intact—”you’ve gotta finish the book.”
“I’m picking books based on cool endings, endings that stuck with me,” the comedian said in the announcement post. To kick things off, Jeselnik has aptly picked The Getaway by Jim Thompson, whose hard-boiled crime writing is bleak, fast and morally messy—which makes it a strangely perfect extension of Jeselnik’s own comedic worldview. If we’re going by the comments on the announcement post, you’ll need an emotional support plushie to get through that ending.
Sit in a library, support your local book store, order it from that billion dollar e-commerce website that started as a book store or listen to the audiobook. Jeselnik doesn’t really care. All he cares about is the one rule we’ve mentioned earlier. Gianmarco Soresi, Patton Oswalt and Matt Braugner have already announced that they’re in for the ride. So, you’re in great company.
This isn’t the first time Jeselnik is rallying his fans to join in on some literary fun. Last year, he tore through 52 books. For those who are bad at math, that’s one book every week. It was followed up by one scorching mini review every Tuesday.
Clearly, there’s no time to waste. You never know if he’s going to up the ante and drop more than one recommendation every month. So get cracking. There’s only so many times you’ll get to see your new year’s resolution through with a comedy legend.
In case you have any questions or comments about the book, mail them across to jeselnikbookclub@gmail.com before 24 January and the comedian will answer them in a video at the end of the month.
