On 2 May 2023, 11,500 members of the Writers Guild of America (WGA) went on strike after negotiations with the top studios for higher minimum pay, an increase in writers per show, streaming residuals and curbing the use of artificial intelligence fell through.
Yesterday marked the 100th day of the strike which intensified last month after the Screen Actors Guild joined the WGA on the picket lines. This milestone matches the duration of the last WGA strike 15 years ago when screenwriters demanded compensation for shows distributed online.
The work stoppage is taking a toll on florists, caterers, costume suppliers and other small businesses that support the entertainment industry. Picketers standing outside major studios including Disney, Netflix, Warner Bros. Discovery, NBCUniversal, Paramount Global, Amazon, Apple, Sony Pictures Entertainment and more have used their writing skills to put up some incredibly powerful and funny signs that drive home the importance of writers.
Big names including Stephen Colbert, Bryan Cranston, John Mulaney and Tina Fey were amongst the protesters. Here are some of our favourites.
