In 2012, comedian Tig Notaro got up on stage at Los Angeles’ Largo comedy club and performed arguably one of the most memorable standup sets in comedy history. Having been diagnosed with cancer four days prior to the performance, Notaro started her set with a simple announcement: “Hello. Good evening, hello. I have cancer.” She followed that up with a 29-minute routine that put her on the comedy map. It was a performance that really captured her essence on stageโvulnerable, easygoing and confessional. 12 years later, little has changed on her Prime Video special Hello Again.
The hour-long special has Notaro’s trademark blend of self-deprecatory humour and anecdotes that are not only comedic treasure troves, but grand and enthralling in themselves. She’s a masterful storyteller, crafting jokes from conversations she’s had with her seven-year-old twins or, weaving magic out of drug-induced tractor-featuring hallucinations.
One of the high-points of the special is an anecdote about a misunderstanding stemming from her poor hearing. Notaro goes into great detail as she looks at the scenario from various perspectives, mining new insight, and in turn punchlines, every single time. Every word is measured and what could easily have devolved into the proverbial flogging of a dead horse, instead becomes a showcase of her mastery of the comedic dark arts.
Notaro excels at mining laughs from the small indignities of everyday mundanity. She manages to dig out endearing moments and jokes from otherwise bleak or banal experiences, whether she’s being carried out of bed by a 911 emergency responder or being misgendered because of a medical professional’s hand gesture.
If she had stuck to these strengths, Hello Again would have next to no faults. But towards the end, she wanders off the path a little. A piano is wheeled onto the stage, as Notaro tells us that “I love to sing and play the piano. I don’t know how to do either.” After tinkering around with the keys for a whileโto some tepid laughsโshe dives into a story involving pop star Adele, teasing the audience with the promise of a performance of her famous song Hello. It’s something we’ve seen her do in the past and absolutely nail, especially in her Netflix special Happy To Be Here where she strung us along for 10 minutes with the promise of an Indigo Girls performance. In this one, it didn’t quite work. After the first five minutes, it started to get irksome.
Having just witnessed a great gag involving a musical instrument in Dave Attell’s recent special Hot Cross Buns, this one didn’t quite land. But it’s the only real blemish on an otherwise wonderful special. Barring this little failed experiment, Hello Again is a reminder of Notaro’s comedic prowess with enough high points to make you belly laugh.
