In exactly one week, Varun Grover’s directorial debut All India Rank will hit the theatres. If the trailer was any indication, the film promises to tug at the heartstrings as it tells the story of a 17-year-old boy who is preparing for the gruelling IIT entrance exams and the various hurdles that come along the way. This might be Grover’s first foray into directing but he’s proven himself to be an impeccable writer by lending his pen to works such as Masaan, Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar and Sacred Games. With all this experience, Grover has a lot of knowledge to share when it comes to writing. And he’s done precisely that in a video he dropped yesterday titled Screenwriting Ke Funday.

In the 18-minute masterclass, Grover goes over various aspects of writing lyrics and screenplays including where to get ideas from, how to expand on them, dealing with the infamous creative block and how to collaborate in writers rooms. In addition to shining the light on these topics, he also shares some anecdotes of challenges he’s faced while writing certain songs, gives movie recommendations and tells us who some of his favourite authors are.
