Vivek Samtani keeps popping up frequently on our YouTube timeline these days. The Jabalpur comedian started uploading only a year ago but already has 55 videos—including a half-hour comedy special titled Thank You, Mom and Dad—on his channel with over 30 million views across all of them. It’s hard to ignore Samtani’s edgy takes on topics such as dating, engineers and college life, which are often laced with copious amounts of self-deprecating humour aimed (more often than not) at his own short stature. Now, Samtani is taking a step away from the traditional standup comedy format. He’s mixing it up by bringing on fellow comedians to share the stage for an interactive crowd work show. On 6 August, he dropped Find Your Partner—his first video in this experimental new format—in collaboration with Yash Rathi.
At the beginning of every performance in this series, the audience is asked one question—mostly related to dating and relationships —which they answer on chits. Once Samtani has warmed up the crowd, he calls on the guest for the evening. The duo make their way through these answers, leading to some all-out crowd work mayhem. “Love is such a universal and relatable concept,” Samtani told DeadAnt. “The main concept is to be matchmakers live on stage. Think of it as the live dating app.”
The idea was born out of Samtani’s desire to collaborate with fellow comedians on stage. He believes that the contrasting styles can really bring out the best in each comedian. There’s also the added benefit of catching two comedians for the price of one. Ek pe ek free, India’s favourite offer.
In addition to answering questions, Samtani’s audience sometimes goes the extra mile, writing the jokes as well. “The audience can really be the funny one in this concept,” said Samtani. “For example, one audience member said my red flag was being too similar to my mother. I just burst out laughing. I had absolutely nothing to say to that.”
The videos are slightly different from what you usually see on YouTube. I’m proud of that.
So far, Samtani has performed and recorded shows with Aashish Solanki, Rajat Chuauhan, Rajat Sood and Yash Rathi. He’s planning to release 10 episodes this season, at the rate of three or four a month, before going on to record more material.
“I would really like to share the stage with Rahul Subramanian,” said Samtani when asked about who he would like to collaborate with next. “He’s brilliant at crowd work and my favourite comic. I’m reaching out to as many comedians as possible, so let’s see.”
Though the series is mostly focused on the dating format at the moment, Samtani has no plans to limit himself to just that. He wants to continue experimenting and bring on comedy influencers and YouTubers on stage as well.
So far, Samtani is quite happy with how the project has turned out. “The dopamine rush after every show is very real,” he said. “The videos are slightly different from what you usually see on YouTube. I’m proud of that. All in all, I’m just happy this new concept show has resonated well with the audience. Their reaction has been exactly what I was hoping for.”
Stay tuned to Samtani’s YouTube channel to see the videos he has slated for release in the coming months, and to find out what other leaps of faith he takes in the process of fine-tuning this ongoing experiment.
