A number of audience members walked out of a Dave Chappelle show in Boston after the comedian spoke out about the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict. Theย Wall Street Journalย reports that during his 19 October show at Bostonโs TD Garden, the comedian condemned Hamasโs attack on Israel on 7 October, as well as Israelโs retaliatory bombing of Gaza, which he characterised as โwar crimes.โ
Attendees told theย WSJย that the comments came after Chappelle said that he didnโt think students should lose job offers for supporting Palestinians. An audience member shouted for Chappelle to shut up, which prompted Chappelle to criticise the Israeli government for cutting off water and other essentials to civilians in Gaza. He also accused the Israeli government of killing innocent people, later saying that two wrongs donโt make a right. Some attendees walked out of the show in protest, alleging that Chappelleโs words made them feel unsafe.
A spokesperson for Chappelle told theย Daily Mailย that the comedian was not in Boston on that evening, though theย WSJย report quotes multiple audience members, and the Boston venueโs website shows that he was scheduled to perform there on 19 and 20 October.
