Dolly Singh and Zarna Garg are among the 25 winners of Instagram’s inaugural Rings, an award “that’s all about celebrating those who aren’t afraid to take creative chances and do it their way”. Other winners include Aki and Koichi, Olivia Dean and Cole Bennett.

Each winner will receive a gold ring designed by Grace Wales Bonner, a leading voice in fashion and culture and one of the judges on this year’s panel. In addition to that, a digital gold ring will pop up when they post an Instagram story and they will have the ability to customise their like button and their profile backdrop colour.

“When I first got to know about it, obviously after a lot of tears, the first feeling was validation,” Singh said in a post she shared yesterday. “In the last few years especially, there has been a lot of experimentation I’ve been up to…lot of risk taking. A lot of trying new things and doing things which are different from other people. And of course, because of that I have seen a lot of failure and I’ve seen a lot of questions raised about it.”

Garg celebrated in her trademark style—with a pineapple and some self-deprecatory humour before acknowledging her hard work and passion. “I did not win the Nobel Prize. I did not win the science Olympiad, math Olympiad. I didn’t even win that stinking Pulitzer that they give out for writing stories and skits and stuff. I got the prize for best Instagrammer. How would they [her parents] show their face in the community?”

The winners were picked by a panel of judges who nominated their favourite creators of the year and voted for who they think deserves a spot on the final list. The panel of judges included Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri, filmmaker Spike Lee, American YouTuber Marques Keith Brownlee better known as MKBHD and American creator Ilona Maher.
