At DeadAnt, we love comedy but we also really love our food. So, the prospect of a combination of the two is an offer we can’t (and wholeheartedly don’t want to) refuse. That’s why comedian Amrita Chanda has been taking her peers to Mumbai’s most iconic restaurants and chatting up a storm over piping hot meals on Today’s Special. Five episodes of the show are out now on YouTube. That’s five delicious meals with five top comedians at five landmark foodie destinations. Right in time for World Food Day too! First up? Sumaira Shaikh, let’s get down to it.
SUMAIRA SHAIKH – JIMMY BOY
In episode one, we meet Sumaira Shaikh in Fort, Mumbai to munch on some grub at 98-year-old Parsi restaurant Jimmy Boy. Over a course of kebab koobideh, patra ni macchi and lots of keema pav, the comedians talk about everything from embarrassing nicknames to favourite childhood comfort foods, before washing everything down with Pallonji’s raspberry soda. As Shaikh would say, it’s kill!
PAVITRA SHETTY – KHANE KHAS
Chanda is joined by comedian Pavitra Shetty in episode two at Khane Khas, a Punjabi restaurant known for its homestyle North Indian food and open-air seating. The duo explore the very limits of food experimentation (bananas and chapatis? Really?) and follow it up with another, entirely unappetising topic; constipation. Thankfully, the food is good. On the menu in this episode is arbi tuk, fish koliwada and Punjabi chicken curry.
MOHD ANAS – RAKESH PAYA HOUSE
Sion Koliwada’s Rakesh Paya House is the third destination in our food pilgrimage, and we brought Mohd. Anas along for this one! Chanda and Anas get to sample Mumbai’s paya soup, paya masala, paya tawa fry and of course, paya biryani. While pounding down some mutton trotters, we also get an impromptu tour of some of Anas’ go-to food destinations in and around Jama Masjid, New Delhi.
VINEETH SRINIVASAN – FRESH CATCH
What happens when a Malayali and a Bengali walk into a restaurant? They bond over their obsession with rice. On this episode of Today’s Special, Amrita Chanda is joined by comedian Vineeth Srinivasan to check out Sachin Tendulkar’s favourite seafood spot in Mumbai; Fresh Catch by Francis. The two did NOT hold back and ended up ordering (we’re not shaming here, we’re downright jealous) bombil fry, surmai masala tawa fry, Fulla’s bombil green curry, Kanne Ambotik curry, steamed rice and sol kadhi.
AAKASH MEHTA – SHREE THAKKER BHOJANALAY
If you’ve made it this far without hopping on a food delivery app, we commend you for your resolve. You are clearly a higher being, congratulations. But we’re not done, we’re in fact going to tease you some more with the announcement of our latest episode with Aakash Mehta. In episode five, Chanda and the Nasty comedian go to the famous Gujarati thali joint Shree Thakker Bhojanalay. This is one of Mehta’s favourite spots and he’s been visiting it since he was a kid. He swears by the chaas. In fact, he’s even gone on to claim it’s the world’s best. The episode premieres today on our YouTube channel. Check it out!
