Musicals outdid comedies when it comes to major film honours at the 79th annual Golden Globe Awards, with West Side Story picking up Best Motion Picture (musical or comedy), while the Best Actor and Actress (musical or comedy) went to Rachel Zegler (West Side Story) and Andrew Garfield (Tick, Tick… BOOM!), leaving Netflix’s Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence starrer Don’t Look Up and Paul Thomas Anderson’s Licorice Pizza empty-handed.

The tables were flipped in the television categories, with Hacks pipping an all comedy nominees list to the Best Television Series (musical or comedy) award. Seriously, who decided to club these two together? The show’s Jean Smart also took the Best Actress honours in the musical or comedy category, while Jason Sudeikis (Ted Lasso) took home the Best Actor award in the same category.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) revealed the winners in a private ceremony at the Beverly Hilton in LA on Sunday, with the results also released on Twitter. This year’s ceremony was not aired or even live-streamed, with the HFPA caught up in controversy over lack of diversity and other organisational issues within the group which led to broadcaster NBC deciding not to air the awards.
