When Hannah Gadsby announced the release of their third comedy special Something Special last year, it was also revealed that the comedian was working with Netflix to curate a multi-comic special featuring LGBTQ+ comedians from different countries. That projectโ€”titled Gender Agendaโ€”is finally set to release on 5 March on the streaming platform. The trailer for the specialโ€”featuring ALOK, Asha Ward, Chloe Petts, DeAnne Smith, Jes Tom, Krishna Istha and Mx. Dahlia Belle and hosted by Gadsbyโ€”dropped yesterday.

All the performers have some impressive credits to their name. Indian queer icon ALOK has been featured in Planet Sex, Getting Curious and Random Acts of Flyness while Istha served as a writer on Sex Education‘s fourth season. Ward is the youngest writer to have worked on American sketch-comedy show Saturday Night Live! Smith was previously seen on Netflixโ€™s Comedians Of The World and Belle made waves with an open letter to Dave Chappelle in The Guardian in 2021.

The special is a part of Gadsby’s multi-title deal with the streaming service which aims to broaden “a notoriously transphobic industry”. Gadsby, who has been critical of Netflix for platforming Dave Chappelle’s transphobic jokes, defended their choice to continue working with the streamer. “If you want to change the conversation, you still have to be a part of the conversation,” they told Variety. “So that was really what informed me to keep trying with this relationship.”

โ€œThe last time Netflix brought this many trans people together, it was for a protest,โ€ Gadsby jokes in the trailer. โ€œSo, progress.โ€ Gender Agenda was recorded at the Alexandra Palace Theatre in London.
