The 77th edition of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe kicks off on 2 August. For the next 24 days, Scotland’s capital will be taken over by all kinds of performers—thespians, comedians, musicians… even jugglers! This year, Indian comedians Vir Das, Urooj Ashfaq, Kanan Gill, Sumukhi Suresh, Anirban Dasgupta and Rahul Subramanian will also be performing their specials at the prestigious festival. A handful of them are actually making their Fringe debut this year, so it’s even more exciting!
Established in 1947, the festival serves as the Mecca for all performing arts and is surpassed only by the Olympics and the FIFA World Cup in terms of global ticketed events. Needless to say, it’s every performer’s dream to showcase their talents here, which is made a lot easier by the festival’s open-access policy. Any aspiring artist can have their show included at the festival provided they can find a venue, cupboard or cubicle to host their show.
If you’re in the city and want to catch our local talents on the global stage, this is your chance!
Vir Das – ‘The Fool’
Vir Das is ready to get his passport stamped once again this month. The comedian is set to perform his latest hour titled The Fool at the Pleasance Dome from 31 July to 16 August. The comedian has become a force to reckon with in the international comedy scene following his International Emmy win for his Netflix special Landing and it’s amply evident with his ticket sales. “Roughly half our run at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe is sold out already,” he wrote on Instagram yesterday. So if you’re around, pick up your tickets now!

Urooj Ashfaq – ‘It’s Funny To Me’ & ‘Oh No!’
After winning the Best Newcomer award at last year’s edition of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Urooj Ashfaq is returning to the prestigious festival, this time with two shows. She will be performing her award-winning show Oh No! alongside her new hour It’s Funny To Me which is a work in progress currently. Her run will go on from 16-25 August.

Kanan Gill – ‘What Is This?’
Kanan Gill is a name that will crop up every time Indian standup comedy is discussed. The comedian has had his skin in the game for 12 years, hosting the viral YouTube show Pretentious Movie Reviews, being part of numerous comedy projects including Comicstaan and Better Life Foundation and has a handful of specials to his name. So it comes as a surprise that the comedian is only making his debut at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe this year. Gill will be performing his new hour What Is This? from 31 July to 25 August at the Pleasance Courtyard.

Sumukhi Suresh – ‘Hoemonal’
Another standup comedy bigwig who is making her debut at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe is Sumukhi Suresh. She’s given us iconic hits such as the YouTube series Behti Naak, her Amazon Prime Video series Pushpavalli and even has a standup special on the platform titled Don’t Tell Amma. Her latest special Hoemonal has been lauded by audiences across the globe, even giving her the opportunity to become the first comedian to perform comedy at India Couture Week. She’s taking the same show for her run at the festival from 31 July to 11 August at the Pleasance Dome.

Rahul Subramanian – ‘Who Are You?’
This is a big year for Indian standup in Edinburgh with one more debut on the schedule. Comedian Rahul Subramanian is following up his crowd work special Rahul Talks To People, which released on Amazon Prime Video last year, with his new hour Who Are You? In the show, the comedian gives the audience a recap of his life so far—from studying engineering to doing an MBA to finally getting up on stage. He will be performing at the Assembly George Square Box from 31 July to 25 August.

Anirban Dasgupta – ‘Polite Provocation’
In January this year, Anirban Dasgupta performed in the United Kingdom for the first time when he travelled with his show Polite Provocation. Leading up to the run, the comedian had put up a few trial shows in Mumbai and we happened to catch one of those. Dasgupta’s latest hour explores the challenges of being a new father while offering us glimpses into his upbringing. It’s also laced with his trademark political humour. Now, he’s all set to perform the show at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe from 31 July to 25 August at the Pleasance Courtyard.
