Thanks to the Internet and every millennial’s unhinged addiction to nostalgia, the Bollywood cult classic Andaz Apna Apna (1994) has become a force to reckon with when it comes to Indian pop culture. While the debate on how good the film actually is still finds its way back to Twitter at least once every three months, we happened to rewatch it (can’t pretend to care about The Crown anymore) and took great joy in rediscovering all the easter eggs and self-referential jokes the rom-com is littered with.
Remember that scene when Salman Khan’s character is asked if he has seen the movie Sholay? “Haan, dus baar,” he replies, and Aamir Khan jokingly adds, “Iske baap ne likhi hai”. This reference is factually true, Salim Khan is actually the co-writer of Sholay. Yeah, sh*t like that.
But the thing we’d missed before, and were absolutely delighted to discover, was that the makers were mucking around from the opening credits itself. May serve as inspiration for the next comedy special? Who’s to say? (Us.)
