Babe, wake up! James Acaster’s PARTY GATOR PURGATORY just dropped. On 19 May, Acaster, under the alias Temps, released a multi-genre, 10-track album featuring collaborations with an ensemble of more than 40 artists. Notable features include the likes of Open Mike Eagle, Shamir, Quelle Chris and Yoni Wolf.
The idea for an album came about when COVID-19 lockdowns interrupted Acaster’s plans to make a mockumentary about a standup comic kickstarting a music career (as a costumed alligator?!). With time to kill and hours of drum recordings, the comedian—who used to play drums in a band prior to his comedy career—decided he’d try his hand out at music again. And so, Acaster sent his drum loops to his musician pals—many who appeared on his BBC podcast James Acaster’s Perfect Sounds—and PARTY GATOR PURGATORY was born.
“It was like buying an album that you could interact with,” Acaster told Vulture. “Your favourite musicians have all made this together, but you’re somehow able to reach in and take out something or put something in or make the song shorter or longer.” Given this creative freedom, Acaster went on to make an experimental extravaganza.
PARTY GATOR PURGATORY is now available for purchase on Bandcamp in digital album format (approx INR 700), and vinyl album format (approx. INR 3000). You can also listen to the album on Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube Music.
