Most comedians spend years wondering where their sense of humour comes from. Kaneez Surka may have finally got her answer.

In a Father’s Day post, Surka revealed that her 75-year-old father, Juzer Surka, recently performed standup comedy for the first time. According to her, the idea had been floating around for nearly five years before he finally took the stage.

The debut happened when he opened for his daughter at a show in Mumbai. The set went well enough that she immediately encouraged him to keep going. Soon after, the ophthalmologist found himself performing a full set at The Habitat, Mumbai.

“My daughter is a comedian and she tells me, ‘Dad, before you die, you must do comedy,'” he told the audience. “And she keeps on telling me that the time is coming closer.”

The clip also features a wonderful punchline involving an airport encounter, a former classmate and an unfortunate, but equally hilarious, realisation.

In her post, Surka joked that while she never followed her father into medicine, he has now followed her into comedy instead. More importantly, she admitted something many of us probably won’t enjoy doing: he was genuinely funny.

As far as Father’s Day surprises go, discovering your dad has been secretly sitting on standup material for decades is a pretty good one.
