Comedians Manjeet Sarkar and Mayur Kamble are two of the leading Dalit voices in the Indian comedy scene. Both of them have performed shows with the collective Blue Materialโan all Dalit lineup showโand are touring the country with their solo shows Untouchable (Sarkar) and Annihilation (Kamble). So it comes as a surprise that the two comedians have never performed on the same lineup. They’re going to fix that on this Sunday, 21 April, with a show titled Manjeet, Mayur & You at The Habitat, Mumbai.
“Mayur and I met for the first time two weeks ago,” Sarkar told us. “He had come to perform his show in Bengaluru and I happened to be at the same club.”
Sarkar was intrigued by Kamble’s performance, which included riffs on anxiety and their parents. He tackles these topics himself in his comedy, but Kamble’s city upbringing set their material apart. “He really killed that night and I invited him over to my place,” he said.
“I had told him I’ll leave by 1:30-2:00am but we ended up chatting about the scene, our inspirations and how we write our material till the sun came up,” laughed Kamble. “And now I’m very excited that this show is happening.”
Sarkar and Kamble’s tรชte-ร -tรชte led to the idea of putting up a show together. They were both excited by the contrast in their material owing to their lived experiencesโSarkar grew up in a small village in Bastar, Chattisgarh and Kamble in Mumbaiโwhich would result in a robust show. Both comedians tackle issues related to caste, identity and politics through their comedy.
“It was all so spontaneous. I had not done a lineup show or performed with anybody else for a very long time,” said Sarkar. “But this is good for me as a comedian. To do a half-hour set with a talented comic means that I have to bring my A-game and make sure my material is tight. I’m really looking forward to it.”
Sarkar, who recently returned from his debut international tour, is looking forward to performing in Mumbai after a long time. “Mumbai is one my favourite cities to perform in,” he said. “All the people are so nice and they’re a comedy audience. They don’t care about the name, they just want to watch good standup.”
Kamble is a regular in the Mumbai comedy circuit frequenting the stage at least four or five times in a week. “I’m doing a half-hour set after really long,” he told us. “Usually the spots I get are on a lineup so you get 10-15 minutes on stage. So to do this show with Manjeet is really exciting.”
