Pandeyji ke tabele ka keechad, Changu Mangu and General Ke Jaanbaaz are names that every 2000s kid remembers. Because before there was Instagram, we had Takeshi’s Castle, and who wasn’t tuned in to Pogo’s Hindi dub of the Japanese reality show to listen to Javed Jaffrey’s hilarious commentary? Dozens of contestants put themselves through absolutely ridiculous (often painful-looking) physical challenges in the hope of winning 1 million yen. But with Jaffrey doing the incredibly funny voiceover, those of us watching from home were the real winners.
At some point, it stopped airing and we moved on. But we were reminded of it again in 2021 when Netflix released a Hindi dub of the American show The Floor Is Lava called Lava ka Dhaava (help!) and Jaffrey was back on voiceover duty. The show tanked, but we’ve had a nostalgic hankering for those days ever since. 2023 must be the year of the Dragon (rabbit doesn’t sound quite right), because we just heard that Amazon Prime Video has announced an Indian reboot of the Japanese show. This time, however, another comedy sensation will take over the commentary boxโBhuvan Bam. The eight episodes series is all set to premiere on the streaming platform soon. And immediately this makes perfect sense.
Bamโwho roped in million of followers on the back of his viral sketches on short-form content platform Vine featuring his characters Titu Mama, Sameer Fuddi and Bancho Dasโmade the announcement on Instagram. “Aye beta Moshi Moshi! Aa raha hai Titu Mama, phaad ke pajama!” he said in the caption. Yes. Sold.
โSince the original version of Takeshiโs Castle was on television, I have been an ardent fan of the concept, execution and the hilarity of the game-show,” Bam said in a statement. “Itโs highly nostalgic for me to have grown up seeing the show and now voicing it, is genuinely a full circle moment. I donโt think there is any one in my generation who hasnโt loved and enjoyed this madcap comedy. Being a part of this incredible game-show is a privilege and an honour.”
You might be thinking, “how can anybody replace Javed Jaffrey?!” Well, we’re here to tell you that Bam might just be the best fit.
Over the last couple of years, he’s been doing some Takeshi-level dubs already for scenes from global big ticket events (we just hadn’t made the connection yet)โwhen he took on the Ranveer-Deepika, Virat-Anushka, Ambani and Harry-Meghan weddings, he went viral each time. If you’re not sure what we’re talking about, you really missed something, and we insist you drop everything and watch these videos NOW, warna Titu Mama phaad denge pyjama!
