The Golden Globes made a comeback this year, after last year’s broadcast was cancelled due to a number of controversies related to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Coming a few months after the historic Writers Guild of America and Screen Actors Guild strikes, the industry professionals were probably looking forward to a little hard-earned celebration.
Last year, two films dominated our social media feeds and the box officeโBarbie and Oppenheimer. However, only one of those two films made a sweep at the 81st Annual Golden Globes ceremony which took place this morning, hosted by comedian Jo Koy. Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer picked up five awards from eight nominations, including the award for Best Motion Picture (Drama), Best Actor in a Motion Picture (Drama) and Best Director of a Motion Picture. Succession won the award for Best Drama TV Series while The Bear and Beef came out on top in the Musical or Comedy and Best Limited Series categories respectively. Additionally, Steven Yeun and Ali Wong were recognised for their performances in Beef.
The Globes also introduced two new categories this yearโCinematic and Box Office Achievement and Best Stand-Up Comedian on Television. Ricky Gervais became the first comedian to win in the category for his Netflix special Armageddon.
