The Emmy awards ceremony, which was postponed in September last year due to the Writers Guild of America and Screen Actors Guild strikes, took place this morning in downtown Los Angeles. The front running shows at the 75th edition of the prestigious awards were HBO’s Succession, The Bear, AppleTV’s Ted Lasso and Netflix’s limited series Beef. HBO’s drama series picked up six awards from its 27 nominations including Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Lead Actor and Actress in a Drama Series and Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.
The workplace comedy-drama The Bear came out on top in the comedy category with six wins breaking Ted Lasso’s streak of dominating the awards in the last two years. Elsewhere, Quinta Brunson picked up a statuette for her performance in the comedy series Abbott Elementary. “So happy to be able to live my dream and act out comedy,” she said during her acceptance speech. Comedy icon Carol Burnett’s 90 Years Of Laughter + Love won the award for Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Recorded) while The Daily Show with Trevor Noah and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver came out on top in the Outstanding Talk Series and Outstanding Scripted Variety Series respectively.
In other news, music legend Sir Elton John picked up top honours in the Best Variety Special category, making him a member of the exclusive EGOT club (people who have won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony award). The ceremony also honoured all the industry stalwarts who bid farewell to us in 2023โincluding Matthew Perry, Norman Lear and Andre Braugherโas Charlie Puth played the F.R.I.E.N.D.S theme song.
