The 2024 Primetime Emmy nominations were announced yesterday during a livestream hosted by Tory Hale, Sheryl Lee Ralph and Television Academy chair Cris Abrego at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles. FX’s Japanese period drama Shogun bagged 25 nods, making it the most nominated show of the year and the second non-English series after Squid Game to be nominated in the Best Drama category.

The Bear, which raised some eyebrows last year for its controversial categorisation, bagged 23 nominations making it the leading comedy of the year. A close second in the genre was the Selena Gomez, Martin Short and Steve Martin-starrer Only Murders In The Building with 21 nominations. All three lead actors are nominated and A-list guest stars Meryl Streep and Paul Rudd’s performances were recognised with nominations in the Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series category.

On the platforms front, Netflix led the tally with 107 total nominations followed by FX (93), HBO (91) and AppleTV+ (72). The 76th Primetime Emmy Awards will be aired on 15 September. The host for the ceremony is yet to be announced.
