Richard Lewis passed away at the age of 76 last week. Friends and fans from across the globe shared some of his best work in remembrance. Here are some of our favourites.
“He had that rare combination of being the funniest person and also the sweetest,” said Larry David, creator of Curb Your Enthusiasm and Richard Lewis’ longtime friend, in a statement about Lewis’ passing. That’s a rare sentimental display from the man whose TV persona’s rolodex of emotions seems restricted to annoyance, hatred and anger.
Not only did Lewis play a significant role in David’s life and his Emmy-award winning show, he influenced a number of comedians, actors and writers with his confessional and self-deprecating brand of humour. Lewis’ comedy was as dark as the all-black clothes he always donned, poking fun at his struggles with addiction and depression.
When the news of his passing came to light on 28 February, his peers and thousands of fans poured their hearts out, sharing some of his best work on X (formerly known as Twitter). Here’s a glimpse of the impact Lewis and his comedy had on the world.
