Indian comedian and actor Vir Das is taking his advocacy for stray animals a step further with a new charity livestream format titled Breaking. Scheduled for Sunday, 31 May at 12 PM, the stream will see Das and viewers avoid the news beforehand, react to breaking developments together in real time and raise funds for an NGO working with street dogs in Punjab.

The livestream arrives amid a growing national debate around stray dog welfare and animal rights. In recent weeks, Supreme Court directions concerning the management and relocation of stray dogs have reignited discussions around public safety, animal welfare and the treatment of community dogs. As the conversation intensified, Das emerged as one of the most vocal public figures speaking on the issue, using his social media platforms to advocate for adoption, animal welfare initiatives and stronger action against cruelty.

Explaining the idea behind Breaking, Das revealed that the format originally began during his live tour. Audiences and the comedian would stay away from their phones before a show and then hear the day’s biggest news stories together. He now plans to bring that experience online, with each episode benefiting a different animal welfare charity.

In a recent post, he urged legal experts to help create practical guides for residents and communities dealing with animal cruelty cases. He also called on what he described as the “ethical media” to spotlight instances of abuse and remind people that harming animals carries legal consequences.

In another strongly worded message directed at public figures and content creators, Das criticised the reluctance of influential personalities to speak up about the issue, arguing that facing criticism online is insignificant compared to the violence being inflicted on animals.

The comedian also floated policy ideas that could incentivise adoption and fund sterilisation and rescue drives, while repeatedly encouraging people to adopt stray dogs. One of his posts framed adoption not simply as charity, but as an act that could meaningfully improve both the animal’s life and the owner’s.

Animal welfare has long been a recurring cause for Das. He has previously partnered with and highlighted animal charities during his live performances, often directing a portion of show proceeds towards welfare organisations.

With Breaking, Das appears to be combining that advocacy with comedy and conversation. As he put it in his announcement, the goal is simple: hear the news together, have a few laughs and raise money for animals.
