Vir Das, who recently won an International Emmy for his Netflix special Vir Das: Landing in the comedy category, added another feather to his cap on 15 December by performing for a sold out crowd of nearly 5,000 adoring fans at the Apollo Hammersmith Theatre in London. Comedian Aadar Malik warmed up the crowd before Das came up on stage. The iconic venue has been a home for some of the biggest musical artists in history including The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, AC/DC, David Bowie as well as comedy legends such as Dave Chappelle and Michael McIntyre.
“I first heard about the Hammersmith Apollo when I watched a program on BBC called Live At The Apollo,” Das said in a video he posted to Instagram. “And it seemed like this far away comedy destination that you watch on television and that it’s never going to be part of your future. […] So, if there’s any artist on my Instagram who ever watched this, I just want you to knowโkeep going and some day you might be in London in front of these people,” he said, which is followed by thunderous applause.
Fans in the audience took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to share the exhilarating experience they all shared.
Das in currently on his Mind Fool tour which spans 33 countries and seven continents and will see the comedian perform at New York’s Carnegie Hall in January, making him the first Indian comedian to take the stage at the iconic venue. He will also perform at The Chicago Theatre, The Kennedy Center and the Wilbur Theatre.
