A Very Merry Christmas Playlist: 10 Songs To Lift Your Mood This Season

Spread the love

As if trying to airdrop presents into millions of homes across the world in one night wasn’t tough enough (even Jeff Bezos would balk at that), Santa now also has to evade quarantines and virus mutations in his quest to ensure a Merry Christmas. It’s certainly been a grim year. But the holidays have always been a time for joy, hope and healing, this year more than ever.

So in that spirit, here’s a playlist of ten cheeky tunes that are sure to rekindle the Christmas spirit. Yes, even the grouchy ones, and there are one or two of those because, well, it’s 2020. So mull that wine, put that pot roast in the oven, and put on our playlist of Christmas favourites.

1. Megan Thee Stallion – Savage Santa (Christmas Remix)

After taking over the hip-hop charts, Megan Thee Stallion caps off the year by giving Santa a ratchet makeover. Featuring James Corden as St. Nicholas himself, here’s the perfect Christmas tune for that 3am after-party.

2. Abish Mathew & Supriya Joshi – Desi Christmas Song

India may not be a predominantly Christian nation, but—just like Sarah Silverman—that won’t stop us from appropriating a little Christmas cheer for ourselves. Let Abish Mathew and Supriya Joshi show you what a nice Desi Christmas looks like. Bonus: you get to watch Abish try to rap.

3. Ana Gasteyer ft. Maya Rudolph – Secret Santa

Now Christmas may be all about joy and family—and it is, really—but in the end it’s not Christmas without the presents, is it? In this hilariously whimsical tune, comedian and songstress Ana Gasteyer finds spiritual awakening while on a Cuban caper to get cigars for her secret Santa. With Maya Rudolph also making an appearance, it’s a delectable mix of silliness and fun.

4. Sarah Silverman – Give The Jew Girl Toys

Does Santa deliver to all the good kids, or just the Christian ones? That’s the question at the heart of this fun ditty that lampoons Christmas consumerism in signature Silverman style.

5. Adam Sandler – The Christmas Song

You might know Adam Sandler for ‘Uncut Gems’, ‘The Waterboy’ or ‘Grown Ups’ but here’s the song that earned him a permanent spot on Santa’s naughty list. If Santa didn’t frown on bad boys before, he does now.

6. Amber Ruffin’s Brutally Honest Christmas Song

There’s no getting away from it. 2020 has been a dumpster fire of a year. But what better way to cope with the trauma of the last 12 months than by laughing at it? Here’s ‘Late Night With Seth Meyers’ writer Amber Ruffin explaining why this has been the worst Christmas ever!

7. Jeff Dunham – Achmed The Dead Terrorist: Jingle Bombs

This is a risky pick, because Jeff Dunham’s brand of politically incorrect comedy isn’t for everyone. But this re-imagining of ‘Jingle Bells’ from the perspective of a deceased suicide bomber is as tragicomic as it is macabre.

8. ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic – Christmas At Ground Zero

There’s more than one way to have a white Christmas, and this jaunty ‘Weird Al’ bop is set in the absolute worst-case scenario. As nuclear ash blankets the earth, one of America’s funniest satirists finds Christmas cheer in the apocalypse.

9. Tim Minchin – White Wine In The Sun

Even atheists can’t resist the charm of Christmas. Australian comedian and tunesmith Tim Minchin is insightful and poignant as always in this tear-jerker of a Christmas anthem. Who doesn’t love the idea of sipping white wine in the sun with your family, after all?

10. Various Artists – Christmas Magic

It’s not a Christmas playlist without at least one massive celebrity sing-along, is it? Thankfully Gal Gadot passed on doing one this year, so instead here’s 60 comedians—including Howie Mandel, Adam Levine, Louie Anderson and Anjelah Johnson singing a special song about the magic of Christmas to raise money for Comedy Gives Back.
