Vir Das ‘For India’, and India for Vir Das.
No spoilers ahead, we promise, but we can tell you that Vir Das’ latest Netflix special, For India is many different things. A foreigner-friendly guide to the country he calls home, an assortment of his fondest memories, a celebration of Atithi Devo Bhava and a reminder of the things we sometimes get wrong…it’s for India, from India, by India and of India.
The special opens with Vir, dressed in a kurta-pyjama and mojaris, at ease as he sips chai from a kulhad. And as he begins, you realise this isn’t a show, it’s a conversation between friends. One that hinges on nostalgia for very specific shared experiences. Like floating bits of Parle-G biscuits in all our respective cups of tea, a confusion of Chyawanprash and, of course, an undying love of Old Monk.
So you can ONLY imagine the comedian’s delight when he received a month’s worth of supply of Old Monk (a week if you throw a house party, and a weekend if you’re Vir) in the mail!
Dabur Chyawanprash made a helluva sales pitch:
Parle-G came through (after all, Parle-G is the OG).
And Tinkle Comics’ Suppandi got in touch:
Vir Das may never have to leave the house again (which is just as well given, you know, COVID-19).
