Spread the love

With a gig in Nagpur done and dusted, Neeti Palta is taking her 14-city tour to Mumbai and Pune for the weekend. Palta is recording her Mumbai show, so if you’re turning up, cut your hair, brush your teeth, and don’t forget to wave to Mom when the camera pans to you. The comedian spoke to DeadAnt about the Ulta Palta origin story, an attempt at a Bharat hasao andolan and a dark comedy show in the works. Let’s dive right in.

QUICK! WHAT’S THIS SHOW ABOUT?

It’s a lot of embarrassing, true stories from my life and I don’t even get to be the hero in them. Kind of my attempt at a Bharat hasao, Bharat bachao andolan.

HOW MANY SHOWS ARE YOU DOING, ACROSS HOW MANY CITIES?

So far there are 14 shows planned across 14 cities. Two are already done. Hyderabad and Bangalore. I’ll probably add more cities as I go along. I want to perform in cities I have never done a show in before. Like Bhopal and Bhubaneswar.

HOW LONG DID YOU SPEND WRITING THE SHOW?

It’s come together in bits. I’ve been working on some of the stories for more than a year.

IS THIS ALREADY LEADING UP TO A RECORDED SPECIAL FOR A STREAMING PLATFORM?

I’m definitely going to get it recorded. I just haven’t decided how I want to release it yet.

WHY SHOULD WE WATCH IT LIVE?

Because I’m adorable. Also, the best things are enjoyed live. Would you rather look at an ad for a juicy burger or sink your teeth into it?

ACCORDING TO YOU, WHO WOULD BE THE IDEAL PLUS-ONE TO BRING TO THE LIVE SHOW?

Whoever you love to elbow in the ribs every now and then as you connect with a joke. I love watching my audience do that!

HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE NAME ‘ULTA PALTA’?

That’s the name I’ve been called all my life by different people, each thinking only they came up with it. It also best describes all the ulta stories and the takes on life that I have to share in my show.

ON A SCALE OF 1 – WTFAMIDOING, HOW NERVOUS ARE YOU?

The nervousness is limited to, “How many tickets sold? And now? How about today?” Once I get on stage and get that first laugh from my audience, I’m happy and chatty. Plus, the last two sold-out shows have really boosted my morale and confidence. So much love!

HAVE YOU EVER SNEAKED IN A YOGA ASANA WHILE PERFORMING ON STAGE? EITHER TO ENHANCE A BIT YOU’RE PERFORMING OR TO CALM YOUR NERVES?

I’m flexible but I’m not sure my jeans are! Instead of performing splits, I’d prefer to leave my audience in splits.

HOW ARE YOU DOING EVERYTHING, EVERYWHERE, ALL AT ONCE?

Having a team that’s not as lazy as me really helps! PS I’m parallelly writing another show which will only have dark jokes. Thinking of calling it Wicked.
