The YouTube that us millennials grew up with looked a lot different than the reaction video and vlogs-riddled landscape that we see today. In the days of yore, the video sharing platform was rife with creators trying to carve out their own niche with elaborate sketches, outlandish challenges and… well, gaming videos were always a thing. Some things never change. Ray William Johnson, CollegeHumor’s Jake and Amir, Smosh’s Anthony Padilla and Ian Hecox, PewDiePie and FilthyFrank are just some examples of creators who first tasted viral fame thanks to the internet. Another name that deserves a mention in that list of internet celebrities is Canadian YouTuber Jasmeet Singh Raina better known as Jus Reign.
Week on week, millions of people tuned in to check out Raina’s elaborate rants—intercut with hilarious sketches which saw him and his friends impersonate his family—about growing up in a desi household. Since his debut in 2009 on YouTube, Raina’s fame rose with every upload, showcasing that people were craved for South Asian representation. Along with his friends Rupan Bal and Babbu Singh, the creator became a pop culture phenomenon, giving us some of the most timeless videos on the platform. His success was also recognised by the big leagues with an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and as a correspondent on the red carpet for various A-list award ceremonies.
With the introduction of Vine, the short form content platform that came before TikTok and Instagram Reels, Raina started churning out six-second clips and cast a wider net to rope in newer audiences. But surprisingly, during what seemed like the peak of his success, the creator decided to take a hiatus for unknown reasons and went off the grid in 2018.
That’s about to change now. In early 2020, news broke that Raina was set to make a big comeback with Late Bloomer, an eight-part series created, written and starring him. Inspired by his Punjabi Sikh upbringing, it will showcase his life as a millennial and internet celebrity through the lens of the fictional character Jasmeet Datta. The series is also being executive produced by comedy juggernaut Russell Peters and will premiere on Canadian streaming service Crave.
While there’s no clear indication of whether the show will be available in India, what we do have is access to all the gold Raina uploaded on YouTube. So, as we anticipate the release of Late Bloomer on 19 January, here are some of his funniest videos that will make your moustache fall off! #IYKYK
Desi Parents and Money
One of the first ever videos in the Desi Parents And… series, this one is sure to hit home because, let’s be honest, most of us weren’t exactly flush with cash growing up. Asking for money from your parents has always been more elaborate than a game of chess. This clip by Raina expertly encompasses the constant battle to secure some money from your parents. We also can’t get enough of Rupan Bal playing Raina’s mother. You have to watch it for yourself.
AIB and Jus Reign : How To Cricket Basics and Training
“It is the most absurd, stoner thing we have ever put on our channel,” Rohan Joshi told Kumar Varun during an episode of the podcast Random Musings. Joshi is referring to the video All India Bakchod made in collaboration with Jus Reign. A hilarious take on India’s obsession with cricket, the video starts off weird and by the end of it you’re… just not sure what you watched? Words fail to capture the essence of this zany video. You have to watch it with your own two eyes and bask in all its glory.
Shit White Guys Say to Brown Guys
Raina might focus on dishing out the laughs but there’s always a subtle take on the racism he faced from white folks growing up in Guelph, Ontario. In an interview with the Canadian Broadcasting Channel, he said that after 9/11 there was a rumour that was spread in school that he was related to Osama Bin Laden. To deal with this difficult time in his life Raina relied on humour. “Instead of being involved in a conflict physically or just being violent with somebody, I would just diffuse whatever ignorant remark they would say and just prove why it was ignorant but in a humorous way,” he said. This video hints at all the ignorant questions he was asked during his schooldays.
The Swag Song
A little known fact about Raina is that he started learning Punjabi classical music at the age of five. He might not have enjoyed his time learning to play the tabla but it did inculcate a sense of musicality in him very early on. That’s on full display in this spoof of typical hip-hop videos of the 2000s where artists bragged about their swag sitting in expensive cars and showing off their wads of cash. Give the bop a listen!
Desi Parents And School
School life evokes a mixed bag of feelings for most people. While it was great to live a life free of adult responsibilities, it came with the pressure of homework, exams and parent-teacher conferences. Raina’s life was no different. In this 10-minute clip—arguably the best one in the Desi Parents And… series—the creator regales us with stories about getting humbled by his parents. It also features one of the most viral moments from his YouTube career. Check out the video to know what we’re talking about!
The Indian Restaurant Breakdown
If I’ve learnt one thing from listening to all my friends’ international travel stories it’s that finding decent Indian food is a task. Now, why would you want to eat the same food that you eat everyday when you’re in a different country, you might ask. Sometimes people get homesick and want some comfort food that they grew up with. Or like in Raina’s case, his parents just didn’t want to drop some moolah on steak and mash and would much rather stick to their staple diet at the rundown Indian restaurants down the street. Here’s Raina giving us an accurate description of all the places he dined at as a wee boy.
What If DJ Khaled Was Punjabi
DJ Khaled is one of the most memed human in the 21st century. The hip-hop artist is known for showing off his affluent lifestyle on social media and his incredibly confusing motivational videos. Here’s Raina giving us a glimpse into the alternative universe where Khaled is a Punjabi man. Enjoy! If only we got “another one” of these.
