Indian-American actor Kal Penn—once named one of People magazine’s top eligible bachelors—has revealed in his new book that he’s engaged to Josh, his partner for 11 years. The 44-year-old Harold and Kumar star discusses the relationship and his sexuality in memoir You Can’t Be Serious, which releases tomorrow.
“I discovered my own sexuality relatively late in life compared to many other people,” said Penn in an interview published in People this Sunday.“There’s no timeline on this stuff. People figure their shit out at different times in their lives, so I’m glad I did when I did.”
Penn, also known for his performances on House and Designated Survivor as well as a two-year-stint working in the Obama White House, also talked about falling in love with Josh (whose last name he doesn’t mention out of privacy concerns) while living in Washington D.C. and his decision to open up about their relationship.
“I’ve always been very public with everybody I’ve personally interacted with. Whether it’s somebody that I meet at a bar, if Josh and I are out or we’re talking to friends,” Penn told People. “I’m really excited to share our relationship with readers. But Josh, my partner, my parents, and my brother, four people who I’m closest to in the family, are fairly quiet. They don’t love attention and shy away from the limelight.”
Although Penn hasn’t spoken about his sexuality or relationship until now, he hasn’t exactly been very secretive either. In June, he posted a photo of him and friends—including the mysterious Josh—at Pride in NYC. The caption read “A very fun NYC Sunday. Happy Pride y’all!”
As with any celebrity engagement, the news led to a flurry of reactions on Twitter.
