Kal Penn, who recently released his memoir You Can’t Be Serious, has been cast as the male lead in new FX comedy pilot Belated. Deadline reports that the half-hour comedy show will be written, directed and executive produced by Rescue Me and The Job co-creator Peter Tolan.

Penn will play Owen, a 40-something doctor who has recently come out as gay and is trying to find his new normal along with his ex-wife Diana. Owen also strikes up an unexpected friendship with 17-year-old trans teen Clay, adding a touch of inter-generational drama to the mix.

Tolan and Penn are both men who came out as gay late in their lives—Penn just came out a few weeks ago in his memoir, while announcing his engagement—so it’s fair to say that this will be quite a personal project for them. Nick Alford of Tolan’s Cloudland will also executive produce the pilot.
