Comedians Varun Grover and Pranit More to do charity shows for International Cat Day.

If you’re a cat parent, or just love the self-important little furballs, there are two comedy shows you must catch this week. For International Cat Day, comedians Pranit More and Varun Grover are performing at Mumbai’s Cat Cafe on 8 and 10 August respectively. All the proceeds from these shows will be donated to the establishment that takes care of dozens of cats that have been rescued by the management there.

More, who has rescued a cat named Pikachu, was keen on helping the people at the venue take care of the 40-50 cats they have adopted and give the necessary medical attention to. “They’ve been doing this show for International Cat Day for a while,” said More. “They approached me last year to do this charity show and it got a pretty good response. This show is also sold out now. They are doing such a great job of taking care of them too. But honestly, it’s not easy to take care of so many cats especially when some of them need medical attention. So I thought I should help out in whatever way possible.”

“I am doing it because cats have needs but they are too proud to go and get a job,” said Grover, who has rescued three cats, Dilbar, Jaaneman and Chhenapoda, and are regularly featured on his social media posts. “So someone has to raise funds for them. Comedy is the most apt way to do that because cats have no sense of humour and still they are very funny.”

Both the comedians will be doing some cat-specific material on top of their regular jokes. Speaking of how they aidโ€”or come in the way of his writingโ€”Grover told us, “They help me by typing random characters on my keyboard that sometimes end up as a great prompt for a joke. Also they are an ocean of calm in this mad city and nothing beats that for a writer looking for sanity.”

More also wants to urge more people to adopt pets rather than buying them from breeders. “People still think of only getting specific breeds because that raises their status in society,” he said. “But there are so many adorable little ones who really need your help. And in turn, they will help you.”

You can get your tickets for Grover’s show here.
