Threading The Line: 7 Comedians Who Are Killing It On The New Social Media App

There's a new social media app in town and here are seven comedians you need to follow ASAP!

Spread the love

Instagram launched its sister app Threads on 5 July, and it immediately took the world by storm, breaking records to accumulate over 109 million users within the first week of launch. Influencers, comedians, writers—and yes, regular Jills and Joes too—were quick to come on board the platform to make jokes about the new app’s uncanny resemblance to Twitter. Soon enough, first thoughts over the name ‘Threads’ poured in and the downpour ever since has been as consistent as the Mumbai rains. Although the platform is essentially text-based, it also includes the option of sharing pictures, videos and enables interaction by reposting, replying and liking each other’s posts. Did we need another app that does that? Let’s not go there. Download the app, don’t download the app. We won’t judge either way, but—just in case—here’s a list of comedians who are already killing it on Threads.

Tarang Hardikar

The name ‘Threads’ comes with endless joke opportunities for the world to enjoy. Most of the first threads people put out were riffs on tailoring, in reference to the app’s name. But comedian Tarang Hardikar’s first post is our favourite because he took a left turn into knitting territory. In a world full of tailor jokes, Hardikar wants a sweater for himself. Hardikar has always been a comedian who loves to play with words, and he’s taken to this latest text-based platform like a fish to water. You get random shower thoughts, absurd non-sequiturs and the occasional straight-up joke as well. Fans of Hardikar’s live sets will have no trouble hearing his bemused voice ringing in your ears as you read his threads.

Sumaira Shaikh

Comedian Sumaira Shaikh barely missed a step in taking her Twitter talents (she’s got 11k followers on the bird app!) onto Zuck’s new platform. Always a keep-it-simple kinda gal, Shaikh is sticking to topical one-liners and on-point zingers about marriage, Swifties, and a potential Musk vs Zuck celebrity death match.

Jose Covaco

Jose Covaco is one of the funniest people on the internet, and that’s all down to hard work. In a rare mis-step, Covaco was late to the Threads party, which he blames for his struggles with a low follower count. And he won’t let himself—or any of us—forget it. In between these recriminations, he shares topical news headlines, updates about his upcoming videos and even offers to pick up stuff from the kirana shop for the followers he has. What more can a man do?

Govind Menon

Govind Menon has been making headlines with his viral Instagram reels about “tasteless idlis” and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s palace fetish. The comedian is taking a different tack on Threads though, posting one-liners that offer a running commentary on whatever’s going on in his life. This is Menon direct and unfiltered, with bonus meme reposts.

Supriya Joshi

You can give any app to this comedian and she is ready for it. Supriya Joshi is doing it all on Threads, from promoting her upcoming shows to posting random pictures and answering ‘AMAs’. She’s even making her vacation plans on the new app. No time gets wasted if you are on Supriya Joshi’s Thread. There’s consistency, humour and the occasional diva vibe. And of course, Barbie jokes galore.

Vishnu Kaushal

Vishnu Kaushal appears to be enjoying himself on Threads. The comedy influencer is trying out quick jokes on the app in the voices of different characters from his Instagram content. He has a more Twitter-like approach towards the new app, even sharing the occasional sports meme. At the same time, Kaushal also gives off an early Facebook-era vibe, with heartfelt posts on mental health and his personal journey. The rest of the time he is mostly just kidding around with his fanbase.

Abhishek Upmanyu

Abhishek Upmanyu is amongst the comedians with the highest followers on the app, and that’s all thanks to his new strategy. He has declared that he will only use Threads to post bad jokes. Or as he put it, “Ye platform main hagne ke liye use karunga.” In between asking fans to unfollow him and posting warnings about following the account, Upmanyu is determined to put out the worst jokes he can come up with. This anti-strategy is perhaps not approved by any social media managers but since it’s Upmanyu, he’ll probably walk away with yet another legion of new fans.
